Aircraft Structural Modification Installer

Job Summary

Avcon Industries is looking for skilled and motivated individuals to join our fast-paced modification installation team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with aircraft structural repair and modification installations, including working with sheet metal tools and various types of structural fasteners, and will be proficient in utilizing blueprints to determine installation procedures and requirements for complex custom projects. This role requires technical proficiency, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a small team.

Essential Functions

  • Identify and tag the location of equipment in the aircraft that must be removed for modification.
  • Follow aircraft blueprints to perform structural aircraft modifications.
  • Perform sheet metal riveting, cutting, bending, painting, and other applications for installations and repairs as necessary.
  • Reinstall removed equipment as required to reinstate aircraft worthiness.
  • Communicate with co-workers to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Prepare parts for the installation process.
  • Apply measurements to parts and equipment.
  • Lift and transport materials and tools to and from the aircraft, toolbox, and work areas.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions to complete tasks.
  • Maintain work center and work area cleanliness.
  • Maintain and promote a positive attitude.
  • Understand and promote company mission and core values.
  • Report to supervisor any problems or work that will not pass Avcon Industries aircraft inspection.
  • Perform additional tasks as required by Avcon Industries.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience planning and executing aircraft structural repairs and modifications, or 1 year plus graduation from an accredited aircraft maintenance school.
  • Must be able to interpret, follow, and execute aircraft blueprints.
  • Must be able to pass drug and alcohol tests as required by the FAA and Avcon policies.

Technical Skills

  • Hands-on experience with installation and application of various types of structural aircraft fasteners, including Hi-Loks, Taper-Loks, solid rivets, close tolerance bolts, screws, and other specialty fasteners.
  • Ability to operate hand tools and power tools to fabricate metal components according to specifications.
  • Ability to utilize measuring instruments such as scales and micrometers to ensure precision in fabrication and installation.
  • Proficiency in sheet metal riveting, cutting, shearing, bending, painting, and other applications for installations and repairs.
  • Ability to plan and lay out fabrication sequences and processes based on specifications to carry out complex repairs and installations.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and technical drawings to determine project requirements.
  • Experience operating and maintaining tools and machinery, including press brakes, foot shears, grinders, drill presses, and typical sheet metal hand tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve fabrication issues or defects, making necessary adjustments to meet quality and safety requirements.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers and managers to determine and ensure feasibility of modifications and production timelines.
  • Ability to document fabrication processes and maintain records of work performed.

Preferred

  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate is desirable but not required.
  • Familiarity with turboprop aircraft such as the King Air or Cessna Caravan is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift greater than 45 pounds repetitively throughout the day, and lift and hold 60 pounds while standing.
  • Must have full range of motion including the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, crouch, stoop, climb, squat, crawl, drive, kneel, twist, balance, and reach continuously for up to 8 hours.
  • Must be able to perform above-chest-level and above-shoulder work, and lift, carry, push, or pull greater than 40 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to work within 18 inches from the body and in awkward bending, kneeling, and twisting positions.
  • Must have good eye-hand coordination and fine finger manipulation capability. Vision minimum of at least 20/40 in at least one eye.
  • Ability to grip and handle general and specialized tools while supporting their weight.
  • Must have the ability to ascend and descend ladders and stands, often while carrying tools.

Work Environment

  • Daily operations take place inside a hangar with occasional work outside.
  • May be required to work during variable temperatures while hangar doors are open.
  • May be exposed to dust and continuous noise from tools, aircraft engines, and industrial equipment.
  • Safety glasses and hearing protection required.
